Bruxism Treatments

Bruxism is a common oral condition characterized by involuntary teeth grinding and jaw clenching. Many individuals experience this condition at some stage in their lives. These activities most often occur during sleep, although some people may also grind or clench their teeth during the day.

Bruxism is widely recognized as a sleep-related condition. Normal chewing movements are controlled by neuromuscular activity regulated by the brain. During sleep, subconscious muscle activity may continue while conscious control is reduced, leading to grinding or clenching. Common symptoms associated with bruxism include headaches, ear discomfort, facial soreness, anxiety, stress, sleep disturbances, and muscle fatigue.

At Mainline Dental Arts, our team provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment options to help manage bruxism and protect long-term oral health.

Why Should I Seek Treatment for Bruxism?

Gum Recession and Tooth Damage

Bruxism is a significant contributor to gum recession and can increase the risk of tooth loss over time. Continuous grinding places excessive pressure on the teeth and surrounding tissues, potentially damaging the gums and creating deep pockets where bacteria can accumulate and affect the supporting bone.

Facial and Muscle Pain

Persistent grinding can gradually wear down tooth structure, causing teeth to become shortened or flattened. This may lead to discomfort in the jaw muscles and surrounding facial areas, and in more severe cases, chronic or debilitating headaches.

Occlusal Trauma

Irregular wear on the chewing surfaces of the teeth can result in cracks or fractures. If left untreated, this damage may require restorative dental procedures in the future.

Jaw Joint Problems

In advanced cases, bruxism can place excessive stress on the temporomandibular joints (TMJ), which allow the jaw to open and close smoothly. Over time, this may contribute to joint inflammation or arthritis, causing pain and restricted movement.

Treatment Options

Although there is no permanent cure for bruxism, several effective treatment approaches can help manage symptoms and prevent further damage. At our practice, treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s needs.

Mouthguards

Custom acrylic mouthguards can be created using precise impressions of your teeth. These appliances help reduce the effects of grinding during sleep by minimizing tooth-to-tooth contact. Long-term use is often recommended to protect teeth from ongoing wear.

NTI-tss Device

The NTI-tss device is designed to fit over the front teeth only and is professionally fitted in our office. Its purpose is to limit the contraction of certain jaw muscles, helping reduce the intensity of grinding and preventing contact between the back teeth.

Restoring Your Smile After Bruxism Treatment

Once grinding and clenching are effectively controlled, restorative and cosmetic dental procedures may be recommended to rebuild function and enhance appearance. These may include crowns, gum grafting procedures, or crown lengthening to restore both comfort and aesthetics.
