Gingivectomy
At Mainline Dental Arts, we understand that excessive or thick gum tissue can make teeth appear short or uneven. In some cases, gum tissue may extend too far over the tooth surface, affecting both appearance and oral health. This condition can occur due to certain medications, bone positioning close to the tooth surface, or inflammation caused by gum disease.
A gingivectomy is a periodontal procedure designed to gently remove excess gum tissue and restore a healthier, more balanced smile. The word “gingivectomy” comes from Latin origins:
- “Gingiva” refers to gum tissue
- “-ectomy” means removal
Why a Gingivectomy May Be Recommended
A gingivectomy may be performed for several important reasons:
Cosmetic Improvement
When too much gum tissue covers the teeth, they may look shorter than normal. Removing the excess tissue helps create a more natural, proportionate appearance and enhances the overall smile.
Functional and Esthetic Reasons
Certain medications, including anti-seizure drugs, organ transplant medications, and some blood pressure treatments, can lead to gum overgrowth (gingival enlargement). Removing the extra tissue improves both function and appearance.
Supporting Bone and Gum Health
Deep gum pockets can trap bacteria and lead to periodontal problems. A gingivectomy helps reduce pocket depth, making it easier to maintain proper oral hygiene. In some cases, minor bone reshaping may also be necessary to support long-term gum health.
The Gingivectomy Procedure
At Mainline Dental Arts, the procedure is performed comfortably and efficiently.
First, the treatment area is carefully numbed using local anesthesia. The excess gum tissue is then precisely removed using specialized instruments, which may include a scalpel or rotary tools. In most cases, stitches are not required.
After the procedure, mild soreness is expected for 24–48 hours. Medication will be provided to help manage any discomfort. A follow-up visit is typically scheduled about one week later to monitor healing and ensure optimal results.
