Frenectomy

Frenectomy

A frenum is a natural band of muscle tissue commonly found between the upper or lower front teeth. It connects the inside of the lip to the gum tissue. When there is limited attached gum tissue combined with a high frenum attachment (positioned closer to the biting edge of the teeth), it can create excessive tension on the gum margin, which may lead to gum recession.

In some cases, a large or tight frenum can also prevent the front teeth from closing properly, causing a visible gap between them. If excessive pulling is present or the frenum restricts proper tooth alignment, a minor surgical procedure called a frenectomy may be recommended. A frenectomy involves carefully removing or releasing the frenum from the gum tissue to eliminate tension and improve oral health.

When orthodontic treatment is being planned or is already underway, correcting an abnormal frenum — sometimes along with a gingival graft — can help enhance long-term stability and improve the overall success of the orthodontic outcome.
