Gum Grafting

Gum Grafting

When gum recession occurs, the body loses one of its natural protective barriers against bacteria and everyday wear. At Mainline Dental Arts, gum grafting is an effective solution to restore and protect areas affected by receding gums.

In cases of mild recession, enough healthy gum tissue may still remain to protect the tooth, and treatment may simply involve adjustments to home care techniques. However, when the recession extends into the mucosa, this protective barrier is significantly reduced, increasing the risk of bacterial penetration and further complications.

Gum recession can also lead to tooth root sensitivity, especially when consuming hot or cold foods. In addition to discomfort, it may create an uneven or unaesthetic gum appearance. If left untreated, advanced recession can worsen over time, exposing the softer root surface. Since root surfaces are more vulnerable than enamel, they are more susceptible to root decay and surface damage.

Before and After Gum Grafting

A gingival graft is performed to address these concerns and restore gum health. During the procedure, a small piece of tissue is typically taken from the roof of the mouth or carefully repositioned from nearby gum tissue to create a strong, stable band of attached gum around the affected tooth. In many cases, the graft can also be placed to cover the exposed root surface.

Gum grafting is a highly predictable procedure that provides long-lasting results. At Mainline Dental Arts, our doctors — Dr. Michael Strassberg, DDS, Dr. Juliana Ko, DMD, and Dr. Milita Borguet, DMD — are committed to restoring healthy, beautiful smiles with advanced periodontal care techniques.
