Oral Cancer Exam

Oral Cancer Exam

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 30,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed each year, and over 7,000 of these cases result in death. The good news is that oral cancer can often be detected early through routine annual examinations at Mainline Dental Arts. Dr. Michael Strassberg, DDS, Dr. Juliana Ko, DMD, and Dr. Milita Borguet, DMD provide comprehensive oral cancer screenings designed to identify concerns as early as possible. When detected in its early stages, oral cancer can be treated more successfully and effectively.

Oral cancer is a disease process that may begin without noticeable symptoms, making regular professional exams extremely important. There are several types of oral cancer, including teratoma, adenocarcinoma, and melanoma. However, the most common form is malignant squamous cell carcinoma, which typically develops in the tissues of the lips and mouth. Oral cancer can also occur in other areas such as the tongue, salivary glands, throat, gums, and facial tissues.

What to Expect

An oral cancer screening at Mainline Dental Arts LLC, 110 N Essex Ave, Narberth, PA 19072 is completely painless and quick. During the exam, Dr. Michael Strassberg, DDS, Dr. Juliana Ko, DMD, and Dr. Milita Borguet, DMD will carefully examine your mouth for any abnormalities and gently check your face, neck, and glands for unusual lumps or irregularities.

Some of the warning signs we evaluate include red or white patches, persistent sores, and abnormal tissue changes. Red patches on the floor of the mouth or the front of the tongue, as well as sores that bleed easily or do not heal, may indicate potentially cancerous changes. Leukoplakia — a firm white or gray raised patch inside the mouth — will also be assessed, as it can sometimes be precancerous. Additionally, any soreness, thickening of tissue, or lumps in the mouth or throat will be thoroughly examined.

If any abnormalities, lesions, lumps, or signs of leukoplakia are detected, our doctors will discuss findings with you and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.

It is important to understand that more than 75% of oral cancer cases are associated with preventable risk factors such as smoking, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption. The team at Mainline Dental Arts can provide guidance, educational resources, and support to help you reduce or eliminate these risk factors and protect your long-term oral and overall health.
